Sisters

Dear Readers,

Welcome back to my author's blog, Happy DETours!

sisters

Today's topic is ... sisters!

As many of you know, I have one sister and she is younger than me. Which I can promise you she still reminds me of that fact, every year on my birthday. She will always tell me, "Happy Birthday. I'll always be younger than you."

That kind of sums up our long running theme as sisters. We are the true definitions of our birth order. I, being the oldest, was always very introverted, shy, reserved, and a goody two shoes. My sister on the other hand was the epitome of extroverted, bold, outspoken, and a rule challenger (I'm putting it nicely ;)

I also think we are the reflection of our zodiac signs. I am a cancer. My symbol is a crab (my husband would agree, lol) and a water sign (very me). Certain traits of my sign are emotional (very true); sensitive (true); loyal (true); intuitive (true); fiercely protective of self & others (very true) and nurturers (true).

My sister's sign is Leo. Her symbol is a lion (true) and she is a fire sign (very true). Certain traits of her sign are passionate (true); social butterfly (very true); dramatic (extremely true); temperamental (very true); creative (true); and confident (true).

Although our two signs occur back to back, growing up we couldn't have been further apart. As young children the differences were less prominent. We rode bikes together, played Barbies together, played in the woods & creek together, and built many snow forts and snowmen together. We were only a little over two years apart and each other's best playmate.

But as we grew older and our personal interests took hold, mine (studying), hers (boys, lol), our differences became more pronounced. I was very shy and reserved much like my mom and she was bold and outgoing much like my dad.

As teenagers and young "adults" (babies pretending to be grown up) we became like oil & water. We could mix for a short time but then we would always separate just as fast. Our traits, interests and personalities were so different that we had trouble finding common ground. This would often lead to a fight or scuffle, which at times included hair pulling and sometimes blood. (*Shaking my head at the thought, but knowing that statement is absolutely true!)

We ended up living states away from each other and laying roots. Marrying, having children, working, building our own families and lives. But as time passes and getting older, those differences as young people start to soften. They're still there, but now those differences are appreciated. Especially as you see your own children going through the same things with their siblings. Your priorities shift. Time and age brings new wisdom and grace.

Our roles have ebbed and flowed over our lifetime. My sister has been my playmate, my adversary, my confidant, my antagonist, my support and my friend. I can't wait to share my successes and failures with her because I know she will be there to celebrate or help build me up again. She has confidence that exudes from her entire being and I try to soak a little bit of that up every time we see or talk with each other.

My dearest sister, although it may be true that we can be like oil and water, you are also the wind beneath my wings too (*insert cheese here.) Thank you for all your love, friendship, words of encouragement, insight and especially for your support. I truly appreciate all of it!

Also, it just so happens to be my sister's birthday TODAY! I want to wish her the best day possible today & always! I love you more than any words can convey but I will try!!

I LOVE YOU MY BEAUTIFUL, DRAMATIC, WONDERFUL, FIERY, SUPPORTIVE, EXTROVERTED, CREATIVE, & CONFIDENT SISTER!

And...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEBBIE! You'll always be younger than me!! XO

Happy DETours!

Jenn
